The Gladiator has intuitively placed easily accessible controls. The traditional Jeep upright driving stance works well in this situation. The larger backseat is a significant competitive advantage against crew-cab pickups. The Gladiator Rubicon trim, which we tested, is tall and challenging to enter. Two engine choices are available for the Jeep Gladiator in 2023: a 3.6-liter gas V6 with 285 horsepower or a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 with 260 horsepower. Although an eight-speed automatic transmission is available for both engines, only the gas V6 can be combined with a six-speed manual. Notably, all of the lineups come standard with four-wheel drive.
The gas V6, or Pentastar in Jeep terminology, is more than sufficient for daily driving. It quickly propels the truck about town and up to highway speeds (zero to 60 mph takes about 8 seconds), but because it needs to rev aggressively to maximize its power, long inclines and overtaking maneuvers can be noisy. Except for a distinctive clatter at the beginning, the EcoDiesel V6 operates slightly more smoothly than the gasser. It produces a robust 442 lb-ft of torque at just 1,400 rpm. This abundance of low-end power enhances towing capacity and allows for quicker acceleration.
