The iconic Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has minor changes for 2022, including introducing a new touchscreen radio interface on base models. Other model-specific upgrades include adding remote keyless entry on the Sahara and Rubicon and an 8.4-inch touchscreen.
Sports models are sparsely equipped with fog lights and a soft folding top with a sunroof. The cabin is outfitted with manual air conditioning, LED lighting, push-button start, cruise control, and an audio system with a display of seven-inch Uconnect 4 and eight speakers.
You wouldn’t call the Sport S models luxurious, but they offer several nice upgrades over the Sport. There’s remote keyless entry and alarm, a premium steering wheel, power heated mirrors, automatic headlights, power locks, and windows.
Sahara models, distinguished by their tubular running boards and 18-inch aluminum wheels, were the first to get dual-zone climate control, ambient interior lighting, premium cloth seats, and a universal garage door opener. A nine-speaker Alpine stereo, navigation mounted on the 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, and satellite radio are standard.
The go-anywhere Rubicon models are equipped with rails, BF Goodrich all-terrain tires, and custom front grilles and fenders. It’s the only Wrangler to come with a 4:1 low gear, an incomplete transfer case, the first with a rocker arm disconnect, and the first with front and rear locking differentials.
The massive amount of power that this 6.4-liter V8 engine produces is due to the use of a stock transfer case that offers a 2.72:1 ratio. It’s the only Wrangler with blind-spot detection indicators in the mirrors and rear park assist.
A three-piece hardtop is standard, as are smoked aluminum wheels, and it’s the first model in the range to offer leather seats or remote start. A heated steering wheel adds the final touch of luxury with rear-mounted paddle shifters.

With the back seats up, the five-seat Wrangler Unlimited has a cargo volume of 31.7 cubic feet, and when they are folded down, it increases to 72.4 cubic feet. On 4xe PHEV models, that drops to 27.7 and 67.4 cubic feet, respectively.
Given its all-terrain reputation, it ought not to come as no surprise that every Wrangler Unlimited has front and side airbags, an electronic roll limiter, traction control, and hill-start aid. Still, only the Sahara and Rubicon hybrid models get Hill Descent Control. The alarm is activated initially on Sport S versions.
The Rubicon 392 is unique because it offers standard blind spot monitoring and rear park assist. However, modern safety features such as automatic high beams, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control are only available as an option on some trim levels. They are not available elsewhere in the range.
While any Sport-badged Wrangler has an eight-speaker audio system, the top three models have a nine-speaker Alpine unit powered by a 552-watt amplifier. They are also the only Wranglers with an 8.4-inch touchscreen as opposed to the Sport/Sport S’s 7.0-inch screen. Each model includes voice control, an auxiliary, and a USB port. Satellite radio, rear USB ports, and several 12-volt power outlets are also included as standard equipment, starting with the Sahara trim level and upwards.
There are five engines in the Wrangler Unlimited lineup, including a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 mated exclusively to Rubicon 392 models that generate 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The preceding is sent to all four wheels through a heavy-duty eight-speed automatic transmission, 17 highway and 14 combined.
Base engine choices include a standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 that produces 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. It has three transmission options – a six-speed manual or one of two eight-speed automatics.
As a sign of the times, a hybrid version of the same engine, known as the 4xe PHEV, came with two electric motors, a 400V battery, and an eight-speed automatic. Its economy is 49 MPGe, while naturally aspirated models return 19/22/20 MPG in automatic mode and 17/23/19 in manual mode.
The automatic-only three-liter EcoDiesel V6 produces 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque, returning 22/29/25 MPG. Finally, the turbocharged two-liter gas engine produces 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft, achieving 21/22/21 mpg through the same eight-speed transmission.
